Grade 3 My House and Home Grading Rubric

About This Resource

A five-criteria teacher rubric for assessing Grade 3 students' speaking or writing about rooms and homes. It scores vocabulary use, "There is / There are" sentence structure, prepositions of place, communication, and effort across three clear performance levels, with a ready-to-use scoring summary table.

Overview

This rubric gives teachers a consistent, fair way to assess student performance on the My House and Home topic, whether that's during the Speaking Activity, while reviewing a completed worksheet, or as part of a short oral check-in. Each of the five criteria — Vocabulary Use, Sentence Structure, Prepositions of Place, Communication & Participation, and Effort & Completion — is described at three levels (Meets Expectations, Developing, Needs Support) using language specific to this topic, not generic filler. A scoring summary table and guidance on interpreting combined results (for example, what it means when a student knows the vocabulary but struggles with prepositions) help the teacher turn the rubric into next steps for teaching, not just a score.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use this rubric while observing students during the My House and Home Speaking Activity, or afterward while reviewing a completed Vocabulary Worksheet, Grammar Worksheet, or short piece of writing about a home. Score each of the five criteria from 1 to 3 in the scoring summary table, add a short note if useful, and total the score out of 15 if your school uses numeric grades. The "Interpreting the Levels for This Topic" section gives examples of what specific score patterns suggest about what to teach next.
