Grade 4 Daily Routines Reading Activity
About This Resource
A one-page reading comprehension activity built around an original 10-sentence passage ("A Day in the Life of Maya") that uses all 12 Daily Routines vocabulary words in context, plus sequencing connectors and frequency adverbs, followed by comprehension questions, an unscramble bonus, a true/false check, a word-hunt task, and a personal writing challenge.
Overview
This is the topic's connected-text resource, and it deliberately layers in every grammar point taught so far: sequencing connectors from the Daily Activities Worksheet ("First," "Then," "Finally") and two new frequency adverbs ("usually," "always") that the Challenge then asks students to reuse productively. The passage follows Maya through a full day — morning routine through bedtime — and includes a secondary character (her brother) so that at least one sentence exercises third-person "-s" agreement outside the narrator's own first-person voice.

Grade 4 Daily Routines — Complete Topic Bundle — ฿99 one-timeStudent Task
- Use after the Daily Activities Worksheet, once sequencing connectors are established, and before the Review Quiz. Read the passage aloud as a class first, then have students complete Parts A-C independently or in pairs. Explicitly introduce "usually" and "always" before students reach the Challenge — this is their first appearance in the topic.
Classroom Use
- After reviewing answers, have students retell "A Day in the Life of Maya" as a whole-class sequencing/speaking activity, deliberately using the sequencing connectors (First, Then, After that, Finally) in their retelling rather than just "and then."
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Complete the Word Hunt first as a whole-class activity, then allow the passage to stay visible while answering Parts A and B.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all parts and the Challenge independently after one read-aloud.
CHALLENGE: Writes a 5-6 sentence paragraph for the Challenge instead of 3-4, using at least two different frequency adverbs.
Answer Key & Assessment
Score Part A and Part B out of 9 (5 comprehension questions + 4 true/false). The Unscramble bonus and Part C (Word Hunt) are self-checking and mainly build decoding/scanning confidence rather than testing new content. Assess the Challenge qualitatively for correct use of a frequency adverb and at least two routine words, using the Grade 4 Daily Routines Unit Grading Rubric.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to answer literal comprehension questions about a short connected passage using the target vocabulary.
- Students will be able to judge true/false statements against details stated in the text.
- Students will be able to locate specific vocabulary words within a short passage.
- Students will be able to write 3-4 original sentences about their own day using at least one frequency adverb and two routine wor
Teacher Tips
Comprehension Question 4 ("Who does homework after school?") is the passage's only sentence about a character other than Maya herself — a student who answers "Maya" instead of "her brother" is likely reading for routine-word recognition rather than tracking who is doing what, which is a useful, low-stakes signal to watch for.
