About This Resource

A five-criteria assessment rubric for the Halves, Thirds, and Quarters topic, scoring student understanding of equal parts, fraction notation, shading and identification, problem solving, and effort. Built to be applied flexibly across a worksheet, a quiz, or direct observation of guided practice.

Overview

This rubric gives a teacher a consistent, three-level way (Meets Expectations, Developing, Needs Support) to score student work on fractions, whether that work is a completed worksheet, a quiz, or something observed live during a lesson. Each of the five criteria — Understanding of Equal Parts, Fraction Notation Accuracy, Shading and Identifying Fractions, Problem Solving, and Effort & Completion — is written with concrete, observable descriptions at each level rather than vague labels, and a scoring summary table on page 2 lets a teacher tally a total score out of 15. A guidance section explains which criteria matter most for which resource, and a short interpretation section suggests what a particular pattern of strengths and weaknesses usually means and what to try next.

Total the scores in the summary table. Teacher Tips

Score Understanding of Equal Parts separately from Fraction Notation Accuracy even when they seem to move together — a student who writes "1/4" correctly but can't explain why the parts must be equal has memorised a pattern rather than built the underlying concept, and this rubric is designed to catch that difference.
