Tenths and Hundredths: Decimal Place Value

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math lesson pack on decimal place value: tenths and hundredths, writing fractions with denominators 10 and 100 as decimals, reading a place value chart, finding the value of a digit, expanded form, decimals and money, and comparing and ordering decimals. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students discover that a decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of a whole. Using hundred grids, money and a place value chart, they learn that one tenth is 1 out of 10 equal parts and one hundredth is 1 out of 100. They write fractions such as 7/10 and 35/100 as decimals, find the value of each digit in numbers like 4.62, write decimals in expanded form, connect hundredths to cents and compare decimals by lining up place values. Worked examples on the slides model every step, and the worksheet moves from shading grids to explaining comparisons.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 60 minutes Number sense place value fractions and decimals comparing numbers reasoning

Learning Objectives

  • Write fractions with denominators 10 and 100 as decimals and read decimals aloud.
  • Identify the place and value of each digit in a decimal to hundredths.
  • Compare and order decimals to hundredths using place value and the symbols and =.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: show a dollar and a dime and ask how many dimes make a dollar. Link a dime to one tenth.
  • Teach tenths, hundredths, the place value chart and comparing with the slides, pausing at each worked example for students to try on whiteboards.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Hundred grid shading: students shade 0.4 and 0.40 on two grids and discover they are the same amount.
  • Decimal line-up: give each student a card with a decimal; the class lines up from smallest to largest and explains each place.
  • Shop prices: students write prices such as $3.45 in a place value chart and say how many dollars, dimes and pennies they show.

Differentiation

Support: use hundred grids and play money for every question, and give a blank place value chart to fill in. Challenge: order five decimals that include whole numbers, place decimals on a number line from 0 to 2, and explain why 0.7 is greater than 0.65.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check writing decimals, place value and comparing (answer key included). The explanation questions and the rubric assess reasoning.

Teacher Tips

Always read decimals with place value words: 0.35 is "thirty-five hundredths", not "point three five". This builds the link to fractions and helps students see why 0.5 is greater than 0.35. When comparing, add a zero to make both numbers the same length (0.50 and 0.35).
