Lesson Procedure

Read through the plan before the lesson and gather the materials listed (paper for folding, board space, printed copies of the Fractions Worksheet or Fraction Practice Worksheet, and the PowerPoint loaded and ready). Start with the warm-up as a whole-class activity so every student has folded and compared paper before fractions are named. Use the PowerPoint for the presentation stage, then move to guided practice at the board before releasing students to independent work. If a 45-minute block is too tight for your schedule, use the teacher notes to split the lesson across two shorter sessions at the natural midpoint between guided and independent practice.

Differentiation

Classroom Activity Ideas

After guided practice, try a quick "human fractions" movement break: call out a fraction (like 1/3) and have students quickly form equal groups around the room, with any leftover students becoming an on-the-spot talking point about what to do with a remainder.

Teacher Tips

Keep the paper-folding warm-up physical and hands-on rather than rushing to the whiteboard — students who can fold, hold, and compare unequal versus equal parts with their own hands tend to catch on to "equal parts" far faster than students who only see it drawn on a board.
