A complete lesson plan for introducing halves, thirds, and quarters to Grade 4 students. SUPPORT: Pair English language learners with a partner who can model the folding steps, provide a visual word bank (numerator, denominator, equal, whole) at each table, and allow students to point to and describe shapes before writing formal fraction notation.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete the guided and independent practice activities as outlined, moving from shape-based fractions to group-based fractions at the pace set in the plan.
CHALLENGE: Ask early finishers to find a fraction of a larger group (such as 3/4 of 20) or to create their own shaded shape and word problem for a partner to solve.
Keep the paper-folding warm-up physical and hands-on rather than rushing to the whiteboard — students who can fold, hold, and compare unequal versus equal parts with their own hands tend to catch on to "equal parts" far faster than students who only see it drawn on a board.
