Grade 4 Halves, Thirds, and Quarters Quiz

About This Resource

A short, formal two-page quiz checking fraction notation, multiple-choice reasoning, fraction-of-a-number fluency, and one word problem, designed to take about 20 minutes and serve as the topic's summative check.

Overview

This quiz gives a teacher a quick, structured way to check whether students have met the topic's core learning objectives after working through the lesson and practice resources. Section A asks students to name the fraction shown by three shaded shapes. Section B is four multiple-choice questions mixing fraction-of-a-number computation, a comparison question, and a vocabulary question about the denominator. Section C is a six-item fill-in-the-blank grid solving fractions of numbers across halves, thirds, and quarters. Section D is a single word problem set at a street food stall, asking students to find a fraction of a group and show their work in a provided answer box.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name a fraction shown by a shaded shape.
  • Students will be able to solve fraction-of-a-number problems and answer related conceptual questions.
  • Students will be able to recall fraction vocabulary, including the term denominator.
  • Students will be able to solve a fraction word problem set in a real-world context and show their working.

How to Use This Resource

  • Administer as a timed, individual assessment (about 20 minutes) once students have completed the lesson and had practice with the topic's worksheets and flashcards. Read the word problem in Section D aloud once for the whole class if needed, but let students work independently after that. Collect and mark using the answer key, and use the Grading Rubric alongside this quiz — particularly for Section D — to assess reasoning quality, not just the final numeric answer.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Once the quiz is marked and returned, have students work in pairs to write a corrected version of any question they missed, explaining in their own words what went wrong — this turns the quiz into one more round of learning rather than only a grade.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow extra time, read all word problems aloud, and permit students to draw or shade in the margin to support their thinking on Sections A and C.
ON-LEVEL: Administer all four sections under the standard 20-minute time frame.
CHALLENGE: After finishing, ask advanced students to write and solve one additional fraction-of-a-number fact using a number not already used on the quiz, as an extension while other students finish.

Assessment

This quiz is itself a summative assessment for the Fractions - Halves, Thirds, and Quarters topic; score it with the included answer key and, for a fuller picture of reasoning quality, alongside the Grading Rubric.

Teacher Tips

Look at Section D's working box, not just the final answer line — a student who writes "12 ÷ 4 = 3" or draws four equal groups shows genuine understanding even if they make a small slip on the answer line, while a correct answer with no working shown is worth a quick follow-up question to confirm it wasn't a guess.
