Skills Assessed

  • Find all the factor pairs of a whole number from 1 to 100 using arrays and multiplication facts.
  • List the multiples of a number and decide if a number is a multiple of another.
  • Find common factors and common multiples of two numbers.
  • Decide if a number is prime or composite and explain why (1 is neither).

How to Administer

  • Give at the end of the unit (or as a pre-test before teaching).
  • Allow about 35 minutes. Students work alone.
  • Mark with the answer key; use the score guide to decide who needs re-teaching or a challenge.

Differentiation

Support: Use tiles or grid paper for every factor question. Challenge: Find a number with exactly 3 factors (square numbers of primes: 4, 9, 25, 49). English language learners: Teach "factor" and "multiple" with gestures: factors are the "building blocks", multiples are the "times-table jumps".

Teacher Tips

Keep a hundred chart on every desk for this unit. Arrays make factors visible: if you can make a rectangle with r rows, r is a factor.
