Grade 4 The Water Cycle Quiz
About This Resource
A 14-point quiz checking student understanding of the water cycle through multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions, suitable for use after the Water Cycle Lesson Plan and its related activities.
Overview
The quiz opens with five multiple choice questions covering the causes and outcomes of each water cycle stage, followed by five fill-in-the-blank sentences using a word bank of key vocabulary. Two short answer questions close the quiz, asking students to describe the four stages of the water cycle in order and to explain how the cycle connects to the rainy and dry seasons where they live, giving a fuller picture of understanding than multiple choice alone.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the causes and outcomes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.
- Students will be able to use water cycle vocabulary accurately in context.
- Students will be able to describe the four stages of the water cycle in the correct order.
- Students will be able to explain how the water cycle connects to local rainy and dry seasons.
How to Use This Resource
- Give this quiz after students have completed the Water Cycle Lesson Plan, the Diagram Labeling Worksheet, and ideally the Mini Water Cycle in a Bag observation activity, so they have both the vocabulary and the real-life connection needed for the short-answer section. Allow roughly 20 to 25 minutes for students to complete it independently, and use the included score line to record results.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- After marking, hand quizzes back and have students work in pairs to write one additional multiple choice question of their own about the water cycle, then trade with another pair to answer each other's questions as a quick review game.
Differentiation
Support: Read questions aloud for students who need it, provide the word bank visually alongside picture cues for the fill-in-the-blank section, and allow the short-answer section to be completed with one or two supporting sentence starters.
On-level: Students complete the quiz independently within the allotted time.
Challenge: Ask students to add the word transpiration to their short-answer explanation of the water cycle stages, explaining where it fits in.
Assessment
This quiz is itself a summative assessment tool. Use the multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank sections for a quick objective score, and the short-answer section alongside the Water Cycle Grading Rubric for a fuller picture of each student's understanding.
Teacher Tips
Read the two short-answer questions aloud before students begin the quiz, even though they appear last — knowing what's coming helps students notice relevant details while answering the earlier multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank sections.
