Grade 6 Math PowerPoint: Whole Numbers — Place Value, Rounding & Order of Operations

Lesson Sequence

Classroom Activities

Teacher Tips

In many Asian number systems (for example Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Khmer number words), large numbers are grouped and named differently from English. Point out early that English still groups digits in sets of three with commas (thousand, million), and practise reading a few large numbers aloud together before students work independently — this one small step prevents most place-value confusion later in the lesson.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to identify the value of a digit in a whole number up to the hundred millions place (place value).
• Students will be able to read and write whole numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form.
• Students will be able to round whole numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand using the digit-to-the-right rule.
• Students will be able to apply the order of operations (PEMDAS/GEMDAS) to evaluate expressions with parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

Differentiation

Support: Provide a place value chart reference card during independent work; let students use the number-line diagram when rounding; pair weaker students with a partner for the order-of-operations practice; keep word problem numbers under 1,000 if needed.

Extension: Challenge students to round the same number to three different place values and compare the results; ask students to write their own 3-operation expression with a target answer of exactly 100; have students explain in writing why multiplication and division must happen before addition and subtraction.
