Halves and Quarters: Sharing Equally

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 math pack on halves and quarters: equal parts, naming the shaded fraction, half and a quarter of a small group, and cutting shapes into equal shares. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that fractions are about fair sharing: a whole cut into 2 equal parts gives two halves, and a whole cut into 4 equal parts gives four quarters. They fold paper, name the shaded part of shapes as one half or one quarter, find half and a quarter of small groups of objects, and draw lines to cut shapes into equal parts.

Grade 1 (ages 6–7) 40 minutes Fractions equal sharing shapes halving problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that halves and quarters are equal parts of a whole.
  • Name one half (1/2) and one quarter (1/4) of a shape.
  • Find half and a quarter of a small group of objects.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with paper folding: fold a square in half, then in half again, and talk about the parts.
  • Teach the words with the slides and flashcards, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework page home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Fair share snack: cut a sandwich or an apple into halves and quarters and ask if the parts are fair.
  • Paper folding: fold paper squares and circles into halves and quarters and color one part.
  • Sharing circle: share 8 counters between 2 children, then between 4 children.

Differentiation

Support: use real objects and paper folding before the worksheet. Challenge: find a quarter of 16 and three quarters of a shape.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check naming shaded fractions; activities 2 to 6 check vocabulary and halving groups. Use the rubric for the drawing in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Keep asking "Are the parts equal?" Children often call any piece a half. A half is only a half when both parts are the same size.
