Same Size, Different Names: Equivalent Fractions

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 math pack on equivalent fractions: using fraction strips and pictures, finding missing numerators, comparing fractions with the same value, and explaining why 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children discover that different fractions can name the same amount. Using fraction strips and shaded shapes they see that one half covers exactly the same space as two quarters and four eighths. They find missing numerators (1/2 = ?/6), decide whether two fractions are equivalent, and learn the pattern of multiplying the top and bottom numbers by the same number.

Grade 3 (ages 8–9) 45 minutes Fractions equivalence multiplication reasoning with models

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that equivalent fractions name the same amount of a whole.
  • Use pictures and fraction strips to find equivalent fractions.
  • Find a missing numerator to make two fractions equivalent.

How to Use This Resource

  • Give each child paper strips to fold into halves, quarters and eighths, and line them up to compare.
  • Teach the idea with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the pizza homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Fraction strip wall: children fold and label strips for halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and eighths and glue them in a wall to spot equivalent fractions.
  • Equivalent fraction memory: match cards such as 1/2 and 3/6.
  • Pizza party: cut paper pizzas into different numbers of slices and find who has the same amount.

Differentiation

Support: use fraction strips for every question. Challenge: find three equivalent fractions for 2/3 and explain the pattern with multiplication.

Assessment

Activity 1 and the quiz check missing numerators; activities 2 to 6 check models and reasoning. Use the rubric for activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Always ask "Is it the same amount?" Children often think 2/4 is bigger than 1/2 because the numbers are bigger.
