Healthy Habits Vocabulary Worksheet
About This Resource
A three-page vocabulary worksheet for Grade 8 ESL that teaches twelve health-related words and phrases (like balanced diet, hygiene, and screen time) through a word bank, a matching exercise, fill-in-the-blank sentences, a sorting activity, and a short personal-writing task.
Overview
Students first study a word bank of twelve health vocabulary items, then move through four exercises of increasing challenge: matching each word to its definition, completing sentences with the correct word, sorting the words into three categories (Food and Drink, Body and Movement, Rest and Wellness), and finally writing three true sentences about themselves using words from the list. The mix of recognition and production activities gives students several ways to encounter and use each word before moving to the grammar and reading resources in this topic.

Student Task
- Introduce the word bank as a class first, checking pronunciation and meaning before students work independently. Students can complete the matching and fill-in-the-blank sections individually or in pairs; the sorting and personal-writing sections work well as independent practice. Review answers as a class using the answer key, and use the personal sentences in the final section as a quick speaking warm-up (students read one sentence aloud to a partner).
Classroom Use
- Turn the word bank into a quick "vocabulary relay": in teams, students take turns running to the board to write one health word and a two-word definition from memory, then check their team's list against the worksheet's word bank.
Differentiation
Support: Allow students to keep the word bank visible while completing every section (rather than only the first), and reduce the personal-sentence task from three sentences to two.
On-Level: Students complete all four exercises as designed.
Challenge: Ask students to write a definition in their own words for three vocabulary items instead of using the given word bank definitions, or to use two vocabulary words in a single sentence.
Answer Key & Assessment
Check the completed worksheet against the answer key. The personal sentences in the final section can be used as a quick informal speaking or writing check of whether students can use the vocabulary accurately and naturally.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to define twelve health-related vocabulary words and phrases.
- Students will be able to use health vocabulary correctly in context to complete sentences.
- Students will be able to categorize health vocabulary into related groups.
- Students will be able to write true sentences about their own habits using target vocabulary.
Teacher Tips
Before students start the sorting activity, ask them to predict out loud which category a tricky word (like "immune system") belongs in — a quick class discussion here prevents most sorting mistakes.
