A Piece of Cake: Understanding and Using Idioms

About This Resource

A complete Grade 8 ESL vocabulary lesson pack on idioms: what an idiom is, the difference between literal and figurative meaning, twelve high-frequency idioms such as break the ice, under the weather, spill the beans and once in a blue moon, using context to work out an idiom's meaning, and using idioms naturally in speaking and writing. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that an idiom is a group of words whose meaning cannot be understood from the individual words. They compare literal and figurative meanings, often with funny pictures of what an idiom would mean if taken word for word. They learn twelve common idioms, match them to their meanings, use context to choose the right idiom, read a story about a student's first day at a new school and sort literal and figurative sentences. They finish by using idioms in their own sentences and comparing English idioms with expressions from their own languages.

Grade 8 (ages 13–14) 55 minutes Vocabulary figurative language using context speaking writing

Learning Objectives

  • Explain what an idiom is and the difference between literal and figurative meaning.
  • Understand the meanings of twelve common English idioms, using context to help.
  • Use idioms correctly and naturally in speaking and writing.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: "It's raining cats and dogs!" Ask, "Are animals really falling from the sky? What does it mean?"
  • Teach literal and figurative meaning and the twelve idioms with the slides and flashcards, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and the homework idiom poster. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Idiom charades: students act out the literal meaning of an idiom while the class guesses the idiom and then explains its real meaning.
  • Idiom pictures: students draw the literal meaning of an idiom on one side of a card and write the real meaning on the other.
  • Idioms around the world: students share an expression from their own language and translate it word for word, and the class guesses its meaning.

Differentiation

Support: give a picture glossary of the idioms and limit activities to six idioms. Challenge: research the origin of two idioms, such as let the cat out of the bag, and explain how the meaning developed.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check idiom meanings, literal and figurative use and choosing idioms in context (answer key included). Activity 6 and the homework poster are assessed with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

Teach idioms in short, realistic dialogues rather than as a list. Students remember an idiom much better when they hear who says it, to whom and why.
