How Do You Feel? Feelings and Emotions

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 ESL pack on feelings: happy, sad, angry, scared, tired, excited, surprised and worried, with the question "How do you feel?" and the answer "I feel … because …". Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn eight feeling words with faces and actions, ask and answer "How do you feel?", and describe other people with "He is sad" and "She is happy". They match faces to words, choose the feeling for simple situations ("It is my birthday!"), and finish with "I feel … because …". The lesson also gives children words to talk about their emotions in class.

Learning Objectives

  • Name eight feelings and match them to faces.
  • Ask and answer "How do you feel?" with "I feel …".
  • Say why they feel a certain way using "because".

How to Use This Resource

  • Show each flashcard and make the face together. Children copy the face and say the word.
  • Teach the question and answer with the slides, then do worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check the words and send the feelings diary homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Face mirror: children make a feeling face and a partner guesses the word.
  • Feelings check-in: at the start of each day, children point to the face that shows how they feel.
  • Act the story: read a short situation ("Your ice cream fell down") and children show the feeling.

Differentiation

Support: teach four feelings first (happy, sad, angry, tired). Challenge: children say a full sentence with because: "I feel excited because it is Friday."

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check vocabulary and simple reading. Use the rubric while children say "I feel … because …".
