In My Opinion: Writing an Opinion Paragraph (TREE)

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 ESL writing pack on opinion paragraphs using the TREE plan: topic sentence, reasons, examples and ending, with linking words, a model paragraph, fact versus opinion practice and a planned paragraph. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn to share and support an opinion in writing. They tell facts from opinions, study a model paragraph about school gardens, and label its parts with the TREE plan: Topic sentence (the opinion), Reasons, Examples and Ending. They practise opinion phrases and linking words (in my opinion, because, for example, another reason, in conclusion), plan a paragraph with a TREE organizer and write their own opinion paragraph.

Grade 5 ESL (ages 10–11), A2–B1 50 minutes Opinion writing reasoning linking words planning speaking

Learning Objectives

  • Tell the difference between a fact and an opinion.
  • Plan an opinion paragraph with an opinion, reasons, examples and a conclusion.
  • Write an opinion paragraph using opinion phrases and linking words.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with a quick vote: "Is summer the best season?" Ask children to give a reason for their vote.
  • Read the model paragraph in activity 2 with the slides and label the TREE parts, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the opinion survey homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Four corners: read a statement ("Homework should be banned") and children move to strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree, then give a reason.
  • Reason relay: in teams, children write as many reasons as possible for an opinion in two minutes.
  • Paper tree: children write the topic sentence on the treetop, reasons and examples on the branches and the ending on the trunk.

Differentiation

Support: give a TREE organizer with sentence starters for each part. Challenge: add a sentence that answers what someone who disagrees might say.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 4 and the quiz check facts, opinions and structure. Use the rubric for the paragraph in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Remind children that there is no wrong opinion, but a strong opinion needs good reasons and examples. Praise reasons, not just the side they choose.
