Kindergarten ESL Flashcards: Classroom Objects — 10 Picture Cards + Word Cards

About This Resource

10 big picture cards (pencil, crayon, eraser, ruler, glue stick, book, bag, pencil case, desk, chair) with "It's a …" sentences, 2 language cards (a red crayon, three pencils) and 10 word cards.

Overview

This pack teaches Kindergarten children the 10 things they use every day at school: pencil, crayon, eraser, ruler, glue stick, book, bag, pencil case, desk and chair. Children learn to ask and answer "What's this? – It's a pencil." (and "It's an eraser."), to listen and do ("Show me your book!" – "Here it is!"), to say a color and a thing together ("a red crayon", "I have a blue bag.") and to count classroom things to 5. The pack reviews the Kindergarten Colors and Numbers 1–10 packs, and it is the step before the Grade 1 Classroom Objects set (on / in / under). Every picture is drawn by TeachLuma in one clear style and shown in many colors, as a coloring outline and as a shadow, so children learn the thing, not the color. The English is short and repeated for very young ESL / EFL learners, and most activities need no reading. This listing covers the Flashcards only.

How to Present

  • Print the picture cards (4 per A4 page) and the word cards (10 per page) and cut them out. Use them to teach and review the words, for What's missing?, Run and Touch and matching games.

Games & Speaking Activities

  • Run and Touch: put the cards on the walls — "Run and touch the chair!"
  • Match: children match each word card to its picture card.

Teacher Tips

Teach with the real things, not only pictures. Keep a cloth "mystery bag" with a pencil, crayon, eraser, ruler, glue stick and a small book. Every lesson, pull one thing out very slowly and pause before you name it — "What's this? It's a … " — so children shout the word. Always show the pencil and the crayon side by side: they are the most common mix-up ("A pencil has a point and an eraser. A crayon is for coloring."). Before each lesson, ask children to put their own pencil case on the desk, so Show Me! uses their own things and every child can answer at the same time.

Learning Objectives

  • Say the 10 classroom words: pencil, crayon, eraser, ruler, glue stick, book, bag, pencil case, desk, chair.
  • Point to or show the right thing when they hear it: "Show me your ruler!"
  • Ask and answer "What's this?" – "It's a pencil." / "It's an eraser."
  • Say a color and a thing together: "a red crayon", "I have a blue bag."
  • Count classroom things to 5: "How many pencils?" – "Three pencils!"
  • Trace the 10 words and match each thing to its shadow.

Differentiation

Support: Teach 3 things at a time (pencil, crayon, book first) and add the others later. Let children hold the real thing while they say the word. Accept the word alone ("Pencil!"), then model "It's a pencil." for them to repeat. In Show Me!, children can copy a friend at first. In tracing, children can trace one word only and color the picture.
Extension: Children say full sentences with color and number: "I have two red crayons." They play teacher in Show Me! and What's Missing?, sort real things into "pencil case" and "bag" groups, and count things in the classroom ("How many chairs?"). Strong children can copy the words without the dots and label the Classroom Objects Poster.

Assessment

Hold up a card: "What's this?" Listen for "It's a …" and "It's an eraser."
