Message Received: The Five Senses and the Nervous System

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 science worksheet pack on the five senses and the nervous system: the sense organs and what they detect, how nerves carry messages to the brain, the brain, spinal cord and nerves, reflexes, and how senses keep us safe. Includes a timed lesson plan, a six-activity worksheet with a reading text, an editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin are sense organs that collect information about the world. They follow the path of a message from a sense organ along nerves and the spinal cord to the brain, and back to the muscles. They match senses to organs and to what they detect, read a short text about the nervous system, put the steps of a message in order, compare a normal response with a reflex, and explain how senses help keep people safe.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 50 minutes Life science reading comprehension sequencing explaining observing

Student Task

  • Start with the mystery bag: students use touch only to guess an object, then discuss which sense they used.
  • Teach the sense organs and the path of a message (sense organ → nerves → spinal cord → brain → muscles), then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students read the text and complete activities 3 to 6. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Mystery bag: put a sponge, a pine cone and a key in cloth bags; students describe each object using touch words only.
  • Reaction ruler: one partner drops a ruler and the other catches it; record how far it fell to measure reaction time.
  • Smell jars: students identify lemon, coffee and cinnamon by smell alone and discuss how smell and taste work together.

Differentiation

Support: give a labeled body diagram and a word bank for every activity, and read the text aloud. Challenge: research one sense organ in more detail (for example, how the eye focuses light) and explain why reflexes do not need to go to the brain first.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check sense organs, the nervous system and reflexes (answer key included). Activity 6 checks whether students can explain how senses keep us safe.

Learning Objectives

  • Name the five sense organs and what each one detects.
  • Describe how the brain, spinal cord and nerves carry messages around the body.
  • Explain what a reflex is and how the senses help keep us safe.

Teacher Tips

Draw a large outline of a body on the board with the brain, spinal cord and a few nerves. Trace the path of each message with a marker as you explain it, so students see the message travel to the brain and back to the muscles.

What's Included

  • 7-page printable PDF lesson pack: teacher lesson plan with timings, materials and differentiation
  • Key vocabulary list (6 words with meanings and examples)
  • Student worksheet (6 activities)
  • Editable Word version of the worksheet
