Pump It Up! The Heart and Circulatory System

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 science pack on the heart and circulatory system: how the heart pumps, arteries, veins and capillaries, what blood carries, the path of blood through the heart and lungs, measuring your pulse, and keeping your heart healthy. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that the heart is a muscle about the size of a fist that pumps blood around the body all day and night. They follow blood from the heart to the lungs to collect oxygen, back to the heart and out to the body, and learn the jobs of arteries, veins and capillaries. They find out what blood is made of, measure their pulse before and after exercise, and explain how exercise and healthy food keep the heart strong.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that the heart is a muscle that pumps blood through blood vessels.
  • Describe the jobs of arteries, veins and capillaries and what blood carries.
  • Measure pulse rate and explain how exercise changes it.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask students to make a fist and squeeze it once a second for a minute to feel how hard the heart works.
  • Teach the key ideas with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6, including the pulse investigation.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the heart-healthy week homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Pulse investigation: students count their pulse for 15 seconds before and after one minute of jumping jacks and multiply by 4.
  • Blood path relay: make a floor map of the heart, lungs and body and students carry red and blue cards along the path.
  • Blood in a jar: model blood with water (plasma), red beads (red blood cells), white beads (white blood cells) and small beads (platelets).

Differentiation

Support: use the labeled heart diagram and a word bank. Challenge: explain why the left side of the heart has thicker walls than the right side.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check vocabulary and the path of blood. Use the rubric for the pulse investigation in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Blood is always red in the body. Diagrams use blue for blood that has less oxygen, but explain that this is only a color code.
