Smile Bright: Healthy Teeth

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science pack on teeth and dental health: baby teeth and adult teeth, incisors, canines and molars, how sugar causes cavities, brushing for two minutes twice a day, and visiting the dentist. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children find out why teeth matter and how to keep them healthy. They learn that children have 20 baby teeth that fall out and are replaced by adult teeth, name the three main kinds of teeth and what they do, and discover how sugary food and drinks help germs make holes called cavities. They practise good brushing, sort tooth-friendly and sugary snacks, and track their brushing at home.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe baby teeth and adult teeth and name incisors, canines and molars.
  • Explain how sugar can cause cavities.
  • Describe how to look after teeth: brushing twice a day for two minutes, eating healthy snacks and visiting the dentist.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask children to feel their front teeth and back teeth with their tongue and describe the shapes.
  • Teach the key words with the flashcards and slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the brushing chart homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Egg experiment: soak a hard-boiled egg in cola and one in water overnight and compare the shells (eggshell is a little like tooth enamel).
  • Brushing practice: use a big model or a drawing of teeth to show small circles on every tooth.
  • Snack sort: sort food pictures into tooth-friendly snacks and sugary snacks.

Differentiation

Support: use pictures for every activity and a word bank. Challenge: children explain the job of each kind of tooth and design a poster for younger children.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check vocabulary and healthy habits. Use the rubric for the poster in activity 6.

Some children may have missing or wobbly teeth. Celebrate this as a normal part of growing up.
