My Family — Vocabulary Flashcards
About This Resource
A set of 16 print-and-cut flashcards — 8 picture cards and 8 matching word cards — covering the core Grade 1 family vocabulary, from mother and father to grandmother and grandfather.
Overview
This flashcard set introduces the unit's eight core words: family, mother, father, sister, brother, baby, grandmother, and grandfather. Each word gets a picture card (artwork plus the word) and a word-only card, so teachers can use the same set for direct instruction, drilling, matching games, or a "grab and say" warm-up. A cover page explains what's included and how to use the cards, and a row of all eight icons previews the vocabulary at a glance. A short note on the cover reminds everyone that these cards show one example family, not the only kind of family.

How to Present
- Print the PDF and cut along the dashed lines (heavier cardstock works best).
- Use the picture cards to introduce and drill each new word.
- Mix picture and word cards face-down for a matching or memory game.
- Hold up a card and ask, "Who is this?" — students answer in a full sentence.
Games & Speaking Activities
- Play "Flash and Say": hold up a picture card for two seconds, then hide it, and have students race to be the first to say the word aloud correctly.
Teacher Tips
Laminate one set to keep at a listening/game center all year — Grade 1 flashcards get heavy daily use, and a laminated set survives far longer than plain paper.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to name all eight family words when shown a picture.
- Students will be able to match each picture card to its correct word card.
- Students will be able to answer "Who is this?" with "This is my ___." for any card shown.
Differentiation
Support: start with only 4 cards at a time (mother, father, sister, brother) before introducing the rest.
Extension: have students sort the cards into their own categories (people who are grown-ups, people who are kids) and explain their groupings.
Assessment
Hold up picture cards one at a time and have students say the word aloud; note which words a student hesitates on to guide review before moving to the grammar and speaking activities.
