Odd and Even Numbers: Pairs, Doubles and Counting by 2s

About This Resource

A free Grade 2 lesson and worksheet on odd and even numbers: making pairs with objects up to 20, counting by 2s, writing even numbers as doubles and using the ones digit. Includes a timed lesson plan, a seven-activity worksheet, an editable Word version and an answer key.

Overview

Students find out whether a group of objects is odd or even by making pairs: if one is left over, the number is odd. They count by 2s, write even numbers as the sum of two equal addends (such as 14 = 7 + 7), and discover that the ones digit tells us whether any number is odd or even. Every math answer in the pack is calculated by the generator and checked automatically.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 45 minutes Number sense counting by 2s doubles reasoning and explaining

Student Task

  • Teach the lesson with counters or cubes following the lesson plan.
  • Do activities 1–3 together, then let students finish activities 4–7 on their own.
  • Check the work with the answer key; use activity 7 to hear each student's reasoning.

Classroom Use

  • Partner check: call out a number of students; they try to make pairs and decide if the number is odd or even.
  • Stand or sit: say a number; students stand up for even and stay seated for odd.
  • Sock sort: give groups a pile of socks and ask them to find out if there is an odd or even number.

Differentiation

Support: give students counters for activities 1 and 3 and a hundred chart for activity 4. Challenge: ask students to explain what happens when you add two odd numbers.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1–6 check pairing, counting by 2s, doubles and the ones digit (answer key included). Activity 7 shows whether students can explain their reasoning.

Learning Objectives

  • Decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even by making pairs or counting by 2s.
  • Write an even number as the sum of two equal addends (a double), such as 12 = 6 + 6.
  • Use the ones digit to tell whether a 2-digit number is odd or even.

Teacher Tips

Let students touch and move counters before they use the ones digit rule. Ask "Is anyone left without a partner?" so the idea of odd and even stays concrete.
