Grade 4 45 minutes Place value reading and writing big numbers expanded form comparing rounding

Student Task

  • Use the lesson plan to teach the lesson in about 45 minutes.
  • Print the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and the homework for practice at home.
  • Use the rubric to record each student's level.

Classroom Use

  • Number cards: students draw six digit cards and build the biggest and the smallest number they can.
  • Place value chart on the floor: students stand on a place and say its value.
  • Newspaper numbers: students find big numbers, such as the number of people in a city, and read them aloud.

Differentiation

Support: use a place value chart with the headings Thousands and Ones and have students put one digit in each box. Challenge: ask students to find a number with a 7 in the thousands place and a 3 in the hundreds place, then make its biggest and smallest neighbors.

Answer Key & Assessment

Check the digit value and expanded form questions first. Students who write 6 instead of 6,000 do not yet link a digit to its place. Use the quiz and rubric for a record.

Learning Objectives

  • Read and write whole numbers up to 1,000,000 using digits and words.
  • Find the value of each digit and write numbers in expanded form.
  • Compare numbers using >, < and = and round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000.

Teacher Tips

Show the commas as a help for reading: say the number before each comma, then say the name of that group. Remind students that a zero holds a place, so 40,205 is not the same as 4,205.
