Student Task

  • Teach the lesson with the slides and the lesson plan; draw a number line on the board.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice in class.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day, and score it with the answer key and rubric.
  • Send the homework page home and use the flashcards for quick daily review.

Classroom Use

  • Human number line: students stand on a floor number line from 0 to 100 and decide which ten they are closest to.
  • Rounding hop: a student picks a card and hops to the nearest ten on a floor number line.
  • Estimate it: pairs round two numbers and estimate the sum before using a calculator to check.

Differentiation

Support: use a printed number line for every problem. Challenge: ask students to find all the numbers that round to 300 when rounded to the nearest 100.

Answer Key & Assessment

The quiz checks rounding to 10, rounding to 100, estimating and explaining. The rubric gives four levels for rounding to 10, rounding to 100, estimating and explaining.

Learning Objectives

  • Round 2-digit and 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10 using a number line and the 5 rule.
  • Round 3-digit numbers to the nearest 100 by looking at the tens digit.
  • Use rounding to estimate sums and explain how the answer was found.

Teacher Tips

Always start with a number line so students see why 35 rounds up. Teach the rule 'look at the digit to the right: 5 or more, round up; less than 5, round down'. Watch for students who change the wrong digit.
