Rock Detectives: Rocks, Sand and Soil

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science pack on rocks and soil: describing rocks by color, size and texture, how big rocks break down into pebbles and sand, what soil is made of, and why soil matters for plants. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students become rock detectives. They describe rocks by color, size, texture and shine, put rocks in order from boulder to sand, and learn that rain, wind and ice slowly break big rocks into smaller pieces. They find out that soil is a mix of tiny bits of rock, rotted plants (humus), water, air and living things like earthworms, and that most plants need soil to grow.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 45 minutes Observing describing sorting sequencing scientific vocabulary

Learning Objectives

  • Describe rocks using color, size, texture and shine.
  • Explain that big rocks slowly break into pebbles and sand because of rain, wind and ice.
  • Name what soil is made of and explain why soil is important for plants.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the lesson with the slides (speaker notes tell you what to say and ask) and a few real rocks if you have them.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz the next day and use the rubric to record progress.
  • Send the homework home and use the A5 flashcards for vocabulary games.

Assessment

The quiz (14 points) checks describing rocks, rock sizes and what soil is made of. The rubric gives four levels for each skill and for using science words.

Differentiation

Support: give students a word bank of describing words (rough, smooth, shiny, dull, big, small). Challenge: ask students to explain why soil near a river might be different from soil on a hill.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Rock museum: students bring a small rock from home, label it with three describing words and display it.
  • Soil shake: put soil and water in a clear jar, shake it and watch the layers settle.
  • Rock rub: rub two rough rocks together over paper and look at the tiny grains that fall off.

Teacher Tips

Pass real rocks around and let students use a magnifying glass. Touching rough and smooth rocks makes the word texture easy to understand.
