My Healthy Plate: Food Groups and Healthy Eating

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science pack on healthy eating: the food groups, why our bodies need food and water, everyday and sometimes foods, and building a balanced plate. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that food gives us energy to play and learn and helps us grow. They sort foods into groups (fruits and vegetables, grains, protein and dairy), find out what each group does for the body, and learn that a healthy plate is about half fruits and vegetables. They talk about everyday foods and sometimes foods in a positive way, remember to drink water, and design their own healthy lunch.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 45 minutes Classifying observing explaining making healthy choices drawing and labelling

Learning Objectives

  • Sort common foods into food groups: fruits and vegetables, grains, protein and dairy.
  • Explain that food gives us energy and helps us grow, and that water keeps our bodies working.
  • Plan a balanced plate and tell the difference between everyday foods and sometimes foods.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the lesson with the slides and real food or food pictures.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz the next day and use the rubric to record progress.
  • Send the homework page home and use the A5 flashcards for food group games.

Assessment

The quiz (14 points) checks food groups, everyday and sometimes foods, and why we need food. The rubric gives four levels for food groups, healthy choices, the healthy plate and explaining.

Differentiation

Support: give students picture cards to sort before they write. Challenge: ask students to plan a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner for one day.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Food group relay: teams race to put food pictures into the right food group hoops.
  • Plate builder: students cut out food pictures and glue them onto a paper plate to make a balanced meal.
  • Taste test: try three fruits or vegetables and describe them with adjectives.

Teacher Tips

Talk about everyday foods and sometimes foods rather than good and bad foods. Every family eats differently, so invite students to share foods from home and sort them together.
