Round and Round: The Four Seasons

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science pack on the four seasons: the order of spring, summer, autumn and winter, weather and daylight in each season, how plants and animals change, what we wear, and seasons around the world. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that many places have four seasons that always come in the same order: spring, summer, autumn and winter. They describe the weather and daylight in each season, see how a tree changes through the year, find out what some animals do in winter, and choose clothes for hot and cold weather. They also learn that some places, like Thailand, have a hot season, a rainy season and a cool season instead.

Grade 2 (ages 7–8) 45 minutes Observing patterns sequencing describing sorting scientific vocabulary

Learning Objectives

  • Name the four seasons in order and explain that they repeat every year.
  • Describe the weather, daylight and changes in plants and animals in each season.
  • Choose suitable clothes and activities for different seasons.

Lesson Procedure

  • Teach the lesson with the slides; the speaker notes give questions to ask.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz the next day and use the rubric to record progress.
  • Send the homework home and use the A5 flashcards for season games.

Assessment

The quiz (14 points) checks the order of the seasons and what happens in each one. The rubric gives four levels for order, describing seasons, plants and animals, and science words.

Differentiation

Support: keep the four season flashcards on the desk during the worksheet. Challenge: ask students to explain why days are longer in summer than in winter.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Season wheel: fold a paper plate into four parts and draw a tree for each season.
  • Dress the bear: sort paper clothes into hot weather and cold weather outfits.
  • Season charades: act out an activity (swimming, raking leaves, building a snowman) for others to guess the season.

Teacher Tips

Connect the lesson to your own climate. If your area has hot, rainy and cool seasons, compare them with the four seasons so students see both patterns.
