Sales and Scores: Finding a Percent of a Number

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 math lesson pack on finding a percent of a number: percent as "out of 100", benchmark percents (50%, 25%, 10%, 1%), using 10% to build other percents, writing percents as fractions and decimals, finding a percent with a bar model or a double number line, and solving real-world problems with discounts, tips, test scores and survey results. Includes slides with worked examples, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that percent means "per hundred" and connect percents to fractions and decimals (25% = 1/4 = 0.25). They find benchmark percents mentally (50% is half, 10% is divide by 10), build other percents from 10% and 5% (35% = 10% + 10% + 10% + 5%), and use bar models and double number lines to see the relationship. They then multiply by a decimal or fraction to find any percent, and apply these strategies to sale prices, test scores, tips and survey results. Worked examples on the slides model every strategy.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 60 minutes Ratios and rates fractions and decimals mental math modeling problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Explain percent as a rate per 100 and convert between percents, fractions and decimals.
  • Find a percent of a number using benchmark percents, bar models, double number lines and multiplication.
  • Solve real-world problems involving discounts, scores and surveys, and check that answers are reasonable.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: a sign reads "30% off" a $40 game. Ask how much students would save and how they would work it out.
  • Teach percent meaning, benchmark percents, building from 10%, models and multiplication with the slides, letting students try each worked example first.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Store flyers: students choose three items from a pretend sale flyer and calculate the discount and the sale price for each.
  • Hundred grid art: students color a hundred grid with three colors and write each color as a percent, fraction and decimal.
  • Class survey: students survey 20 classmates, then find what percent chose each answer and present the results.

Differentiation

Support: use hundred grids and bar models divided into 10 equal parts, and focus on multiples of 10%. Challenge: find percents such as 12.5% and 150%, calculate the final price after a discount and tax, and explain why 20% off followed by 10% off is not the same as 30% off.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check conversions, finding percents and problem solving (answer key included). The explanation questions and rubric assess reasoning and strategy choice.

Teacher Tips

Make 10% the anchor of the lesson. Once students can find 10% by dividing by 10, they can reach almost any percent by adding or doubling (20%, 30%, 5%, 15%). Always ask for an estimate first: "Is 35% of 80 more or less than half?"
