Plotting Points: The Coordinate Plane in Four Quadrants

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 math lesson pack on the coordinate plane in four quadrants: the x-axis, y-axis and origin, ordered pairs with positive and negative numbers, naming the four quadrants, plotting and reading points, reflecting points across the axes and finding the distance between points with the same x- or y-coordinate. Includes slides with worked examples, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students extend the coordinate grid they know to all four quadrants. They learn the parts of the coordinate plane (x-axis, y-axis, origin), read and write ordered pairs with negative numbers, and name quadrants I to IV using the signs of the coordinates. They plot points and draw shapes, reflect points across the x-axis and y-axis by changing signs, and find horizontal and vertical distances between points using absolute value. Real-world problems use a town map with the school at the origin, and the homework asks students to design their own coordinate picture.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 60 minutes Geometry integers graphing absolute value problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the x-axis, y-axis, origin and four quadrants, and use signs to tell which quadrant a point is in.
  • Plot and read ordered pairs with positive and negative coordinates, and reflect points across the axes.
  • Find the distance between two points with the same x- or y-coordinate using absolute value.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: put a large grid on the floor or board and ask a student to stand at (2, 3). Then ask where (−2, 3) would be.
  • Teach the axes, quadrants, plotting, reflections and distance with the slides, letting students try each worked example on mini grids first.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework picture project for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human coordinate plane: tape axes on the floor; students stand on the ordered pairs called out and say which quadrant they are in.
  • Battleship grids: partners hide ships on a four-quadrant grid and take turns calling ordered pairs to find them.
  • Mirror points: students plot a shape in quadrant I and reflect it into the other three quadrants by changing signs.

Differentiation

Support: give printed grids with numbered axes from −10 to 10, and color-code the quadrants. Challenge: find the perimeter and area of rectangles plotted on the plane, and reflect a point across both axes in two steps.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check quadrants, plotting, reflections and distance (answer key included). The explanation questions and rubric assess reasoning with signs and absolute value.

Teacher Tips

Repeat the rule "x comes first: walk along the hall before you climb the stairs." Students who mix up the order usually start with the y-coordinate, so ask them to say "across, then up or down" as they plot each point.
