Order of Operations: Brackets, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 order of operations pack: brackets first, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys with worked steps.

Overview

Students learn why mathematicians agree on one order for working out expressions: brackets first, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. They evaluate expressions with and without brackets, find and fix common mistakes, place brackets to reach a target answer and write expressions for word problems. Every expression in the pack is calculated by the generator and checked automatically.

Grade 5 (ages 10–11) 50 minutes Mental calculation multi-step problem solving reasoning finding errors writing expressions

Student Task

  • Teach the rule with the slides and the worked example in the lesson plan.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day; use the rubric for the written explanations.
  • Send the homework page home and use the A5 flashcards for quick review.

Classroom Use

  • Target number game: give four numbers and a target; students use operations and brackets to reach it.
  • Mistake detective: show a worked example with an error and ask pairs to find and fix it.
  • Calculator check: compare a basic calculator and a scientific calculator on 2 + 3 × 4 and discuss the results.

Differentiation

Support: start with expressions that have only two operations and let students underline the first step. Challenge: use the target number game with five numbers and nested brackets.

Answer Key & Assessment

The quiz (18 points) checks evaluating expressions with and without brackets and explaining mistakes. The rubric gives four levels for each skill.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate expressions using the order of operations: brackets, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
  • Work from left to right when an expression has operations of the same level (such as division and multiplication).
  • Use brackets to change the value of an expression and write expressions for simple word problems.

Teacher Tips

Ask students to underline the step they will do first before calculating. Writing each step on a new line stops most order-of-operations mistakes.
