Saving Wildlife: Endangered Animals and Conservation

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 science lesson pack on endangered animals and conservation: what endangered and extinct mean, the main threats to wildlife (habitat loss, pollution, illegal hunting and trade, climate change), animals at risk such as tigers, Asian elephants, sea turtles and orangutans, how conservation helps, and what students can do. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that an endangered animal is one with so few left that it could disappear forever, and that an extinct animal has no members left anywhere. They explore the four biggest threats to wildlife and connect each one to a real animal, read about how sea turtles are being protected, sort threats and solutions, and learn how protected areas, laws, breeding programs and everyday choices help. The lesson ends with students designing a poster to protect an animal of their choice.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 50 minutes Life science cause and effect reading classifying persuasive communication

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the difference between endangered and extinct.
  • Describe the main threats to wildlife and give an example of each.
  • Explain how conservation helps and suggest actions people can take.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: show a picture of a tiger and ask, "There used to be about 100,000 wild tigers. Now there are only a few thousand. Why?"
  • Teach endangered and extinct, the four threats and conservation actions with the slides, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and the homework poster project. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Habitat shrink: students stand on sheets of newspaper (the forest); fold the paper smaller each round to show habitat loss.
  • Animal fact files: groups research one endangered animal (where it lives, threats, how people help) and present a fact file.
  • Class pledge: the class agrees on three actions to help wildlife, such as reducing plastic and saving paper.

Differentiation

Support: give picture cards of animals and threats and a word bank for each activity. Challenge: research an animal that has recovered thanks to conservation and explain what made the difference.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check vocabulary, threats and conservation actions (answer key included). The poster and the explanation questions are checked with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

Keep the message hopeful. For every threat, show a success story: some sea turtle nesting beaches now have more nests than before because people protect them. Children engage more when they see that their actions can help.
