Six Legs and Three Parts: All About Insects

About This Resource

A complete Grade 2 science lesson pack on insects: the three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), six legs, antennae and wings, how to tell an insect from a spider, insects that help us, and an insect hunt. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children discover what makes an insect an insect. They learn that every insect has six legs and three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), and that most have antennae and wings. They label an insect, sort animals into insects and not insects, find out why a spider is not an insect, learn how bees, ladybugs and butterflies help people and plants, and go on an insect hunt.
