Unit 1 Grammar Worksheet — Personal Identity & Communication

About This Resource

A five-part written practice worksheet covering the verb "to be," pronouns, possessives, wh- question formation, and articles.

Overview

This worksheet mirrors the four grammar points from Resource 2 (Grammar PowerPoint) with independent, written practice: completing "to be" sentences, choosing correct pronouns, using possessive forms, writing full wh- questions from given answers, and selecting the correct article. Each part isolates one grammar point so students — and their teacher — can quickly identify exactly which structure needs more review.

Student Task

  • Assign after presenting Resource 2 (Grammar PowerPoint), ideally the same lesson. Complete Parts A and B together as guided practice on the board, then assign Parts C, D, and E as independent or homework practice, as suggested in the Lesson Plan (Resource 11).

Classroom Use

  • After completing Part B independently, have students swap papers with a partner and circle any pronoun they think is wrong before returning it — most errors are caught by a peer faster than by the original writer, and it doubles as informal peer review practice.

Differentiation

Provide the "To Be" and pronoun/possessive tables from Resource 2 as a printed handout during independent work.
Complete all five parts within one class period, checking answers as a class.
For Part D, require students to also write a second, different wh- question for each answer given.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score all five parts against the answer key (26 items total: 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 6, note Part D is scored as one point per question written). Use error patterns across the class to decide whether a short whole-class re-teach is needed before Lesson 3.

Learning Objectives

  • Correctly complete at least 5 of 6 "to be" sentences in affirmative, negative, or question form.
  • Correctly select the subject or object pronoun in at least 5 of 6 sentences.
  • Correctly complete at least 4 of 5 possessive adjective/pronoun sentences.
  • Write a grammatically correct wh- question for at least 4 of 5 given answers.
  • Correctly select a, an, or the in at least 5 of 6 sentences.

Teacher Tips

When reviewing Part D (Forming Wh- Questions) as a class, ask two different students to write two different but equally correct questions for the same answer on the board (for example, both "Where is your hometown?" and "What's your hometown like?") — this reinforces that more than one wh- question can be grammatically correct for a given answer.
