Unit 1 Writing Activity — My Personal Profile

About This Resource

A scaffolded four-step writing task guiding students from planning notes to a complete original personal-profile paragraph, with a model text and self-check checklist.

Overview

This activity breaks personal-profile writing into four manageable steps: planning (a fill-in organizer), modeling (an original example paragraph to analyze), drafting (guided by a language box of sentence starters), and self-checking (a six-item checklist). Because the task is open-ended and creative by nature, an original model paragraph and self-check checklist take the place of a traditional answer key.

Grade 6 60 Minutes Personal Identity Communication

Learning Objectives

  • Plan a personal profile by generating notes across all six organizer categories.
  • Write a personal-profile paragraph of at least six complete, grammatically correct sentences.
  • Correctly use the verb "to be" at least three times within their own writing.
  • Use at least two words from the Documents & Interaction or Classroom & Communication vocabulary sets accurately in original writing.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use during Lesson 3 of the unit, following the Reading Activity (Resource 5). Have students complete the planning organizer first, read the model paragraph as a class, then draft independently — finishing at home if needed, per the Lesson Plan (Resource 11).

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Once profiles are complete, collect them anonymously, read three or four aloud, and have the class guess which classmate each profile describes — a low-pressure way to make the writing purposeful and to reinforce listening comprehension of the same content.

Differentiation

Allow Support students to write three sentences instead of six, prioritizing accuracy over length, and permit direct copying of sentence frames from the Language Box with only the personal details changed.
Complete all four steps and write at least six original sentences independently.
Require Challenge students to add two extra sentences using Extension Vocabulary (for example, "bilingual" or "multicultural") from the Vocabulary Planning Report.

Assessment

This is an open-ended writing task; use the Self-Check checklist on the resource itself as a first-pass peer or self-assessment, then apply teacher judgment for sentence completeness, grammatical accuracy, and inclusion of required content (full name, age/date of birth, hometown/nationality, and at least two target vocabulary words).

Teacher Tips

Before students begin drafting, ask a volunteer to identify which organizer note in the model paragraph became which sentence — walking through this mapping once makes the connection between planning notes and finished sentences far more concrete than simply reading the model silently.
