What Is It Mostly About? Main Idea and Details

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 ESL reading pack on finding the main idea and supporting details, with short nonfiction texts about octopuses, sleep and deserts, a main idea table, and writing your own paragraph. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that the main idea is what a text is mostly about and that details are the facts that tell more about it. Using the picture of a table (the main idea is the tabletop, the details are the legs), they read short nonfiction texts, choose the main idea, find supporting details, tell main ideas from details and finally write their own paragraph with a main idea and three details.

Grade 3 ESL (ages 8–9), A2 45 minutes Reading comprehension main idea supporting details summarizing paragraph writing

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the main idea of a short nonfiction paragraph.
  • Find details that support the main idea.
  • Write a paragraph with a main idea sentence and supporting details.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the table picture on the slides: the main idea holds everything up, and the details are the legs.
  • Read the octopus text together, then use worksheet activities 1 to 5.
  • Use the quiz text to check learning and send the reading homework home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Headline game: read a short paragraph aloud and pairs write a newspaper headline for it.
  • Bag of details: put three objects in a bag (sunscreen, a towel, a shovel) and children guess the main idea (a trip to the beach).
  • Main idea table: children draw a table with the main idea on top and details on each leg.

Differentiation

Support: read the texts aloud first and give three main idea choices. Challenge: children write a title for each text and explain why it fits the main idea.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 4 and the quiz check main idea and details. Use the rubric for the paragraph in activity 5.

Teacher Tips

Ask "What is it mostly about?" rather than "What is it about?". The word mostly helps children look past single interesting facts.
