What's the Lesson? Reading Fables

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 ESL reading lesson pack on fables: what makes a fable (animal characters, a problem and a moral), reading two short fables, story order, character traits, finding the moral, comparing two fables and retelling a fable in your own words. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students read and discuss two classic fables, The Ant and the Grasshopper and The Lion and the Mouse. They learn the features of a fable: short stories, animal characters that act like people, a problem and a moral (a lesson about how to behave). Students put events in order, describe characters with trait words such as lazy, hard-working and kind, match each fable to its moral, compare the two stories and retell a fable using first, next, then and finally.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the features of a fable, including animal characters and a moral.
  • Retell the main events of a fable in order.
  • Explain the moral of a fable and connect it to real life.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask students if they know any stories with talking animals, then teach the features of a fable with the slides.
  • Read the two fables together on the worksheet, using the flashcards to teach the key words.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the retelling homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Fable theater: groups act out one fable with simple masks while the class guesses the moral.
  • Moral match: give pairs moral cards and short story summaries to match.
  • Story map: students fill in characters, problem, solution and moral on a large paper map.

Differentiation

Support: read the fables aloud first and give a word bank of trait words. Challenge: students write a modern fable with a new moral and present it.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check sequencing, character traits and morals (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the retelling homework.

Teacher Tips

After reading, always ask "What lesson did the character learn?" and "When could this lesson help you?" Connecting the moral to students' own lives makes the reading meaningful.
