Work Made Easy: Six Simple Machines

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 science lesson pack on simple machines: the lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge and screw, how each one makes work easier by changing force or direction, finding simple machines at school and home, a ramp investigation and a lever test with a ruler and coins. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students discover that a simple machine is a tool with few or no moving parts that makes work easier. They learn the six simple machines and everyday examples: a seesaw (lever), a bicycle wheel (wheel and axle), a flagpole rope (pulley), a ramp (inclined plane), an axe (wedge) and a jar lid (screw). They test how a ramp makes lifting easier, balance a ruler lever, read about building a treehouse, match machines to examples and explain how each machine helps.

Learning Objectives

  • Name the six simple machines and give an everyday example of each.
  • Explain how simple machines make work easier by changing the size or direction of a force.
  • Investigate how a ramp or lever changes the force needed to move a load.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask students to lift a heavy book with one finger, then use a ruler as a lever, and discuss which was easier. Teach with the slides.
  • Use the flashcards to match machines and examples, then complete the worksheet with the two investigations.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the machine hunt homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Ramp test: pull a toy car up a short steep ramp and a long gentle ramp with a rubber band; compare how far the band stretches.
  • Ruler lever: balance a ruler on a pencil and lift a pile of coins; move the pencil to see when lifting is easiest.
  • Machine hunt: walk around the school and list simple machines (door handle, ramp, scissors, flagpole).

Differentiation

Support: focus on three machines (lever, ramp, wheel and axle) with real objects. Challenge: identify compound machines such as scissors (two levers and two wedges) and a bicycle.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check naming machines and explaining how they help (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the investigations and the machine hunt.

Teacher Tips

Remind students that simple machines do not reduce the work; they make it easier, often by letting us push with less force over a longer distance. A long ramp is easier but you travel farther.
