Power Up: Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 science pack on energy resources: fossil fuels and nuclear energy, solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass energy, advantages and disadvantages of each, and how to save energy at home and school. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn where our electricity and fuel come from. They find out that fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) formed over millions of years and will run out, while renewable resources such as sunlight, wind and flowing water are replaced naturally. They compare advantages and disadvantages, link burning fossil fuels to carbon dioxide and air pollution, and plan practical ways to save energy.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 50 minutes Physical science comparing evaluating data explaining

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy resources.
  • Describe how solar, wind, hydroelectric and fossil fuel power are used, with one advantage and one disadvantage of each.
  • Suggest ways to save energy and explain why it matters.

How to Use This Resource

  • Ask students to list everything they used this morning that needed energy, then ask where that energy came from.
  • Teach the energy resources with the slides, then use worksheet activities 1 to 6.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the home energy audit homework.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Energy debate: groups each represent an energy resource and argue why their town should choose it.
  • Pinwheel turbine: make a paper pinwheel and test how wind speed changes how fast it spins.
  • School energy walk: students find lights and devices left on and suggest savings.

Differentiation

Support: focus on four resources (coal, oil, solar, wind) with picture cards. Challenge: research what share of your country's electricity comes from renewable resources.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check vocabulary, sorting and evaluation. Use the rubric for the energy plan in activity 6.

Teacher Tips

Encourage balanced thinking. Every energy resource has advantages and disadvantages, even renewable ones (for example, solar panels produce less on cloudy days).
