A, An & Where Is It? — Grammar Worksheet

About This Resource

A three-part grammar worksheet that teaches the a/an article rule, practices the prepositions on and in, and has students unscramble sentences built from the unit's two target question-and-answer patterns.

Overview

This worksheet gives focused, written grammar practice to complement the oral work in Resource 4. Part A has students choose a or an for six pictured classroom objects, using "eraser" as the one example that takes an. Part B has students choose on or in to complete five location sentences. Part C has students reorder scrambled words into the four target sentences: "What is this?", "It is a book.", "Where is the pencil?", and "It is on the desk." A complete, verified answer key is included.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Grammar

Student Task

  • Teach or review the a/an rule using Part A's instruction line before students begin.
  • Have students complete Part A and Part B independently.
  • Model one example of unscrambling a sentence before students attempt Part C on their own.
  • Check work together or using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Write each Part C sentence's scrambled words on separate strips of paper or the board, and have small groups physically arrange (or come up and rearrange) the strips into the correct sentence order as a race.

Differentiation

Support: complete Part A together as a class before releasing students to Part B and Part C independently, and allow students to reference their Resource 1 flashcards. Extension: have students write one original sentence of their own using on or in about a real object in the classroom.

  • Students will be able to choose the correct preposition (on or in) to describe an object's location.
