Learning Objectives

  • Identify the parts and features of a persuasive letter.
  • State an opinion and support it with reasons and evidence.
  • Use persuasive language, linking words and a polite tone.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and read the model letter together.
  • Use the flashcards to teach the key terms and phrases, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the letter-writing homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Four corners: read a statement such as "Homework should be banned"; students move to agree or disagree and give one reason.
  • Reason or opinion? Students hold up a card to show whether a sentence is an opinion or a reason.
  • Letter swap: students exchange letters and use the checklist to give two stars and a wish.

Differentiation

Support: give a writing frame with sentence starters for each paragraph. Challenge: add a counter-argument paragraph and use at least three persuasive techniques.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check letter features and persuasive language (answer keys included). Use the rubric to assess the final letter.
