Start Big, End Right! Capital Letters and End Punctuation

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 ESL writing worksheet pack on capital letters and end punctuation: capitals for the start of a sentence, I, names, places, days and months, and choosing a period, question mark or exclamation point. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn when to use capital letters: at the start of every sentence, for the word I, and for names of people, places, days, months and holidays. They learn the three end marks: a period for a statement, a question mark for a question and an exclamation point for strong feeling. They sort words, choose end marks, find mistakes and correct a short paragraph.

Grade 4 ESL (ages 9–10), A2 40 minutes Writing editing grammar reading

Student Task

  • Write a sentence on the board with no capitals or end marks and ask students what is wrong.
  • Teach the rules, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 5; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Punctuation actions: read a sentence aloud; students stamp for a period, shrug for a question mark and jump for an exclamation point.
  • Capital hunt: students find ten capital letters in a storybook and say why each one is used.
  • Editor's pen: give pairs a short text with five mistakes; the first pair to fix them all wins.

Differentiation

Support: focus on sentence starts, I and periods first. Challenge: write a short postcard that uses all three end marks and at least five proper nouns.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 4 check the rules (answer key included). Activity 5 checks editing a paragraph.

Learning Objectives

  • Use capital letters for the start of sentences, I and proper nouns.
  • Choose the correct end mark: period, question mark or exclamation point.
  • Find and correct capital letter and punctuation mistakes in a paragraph.

Teacher Tips

Teach students to reread their writing twice: once checking for capitals and once checking for end marks. Short, focused checks catch more mistakes.
