Count and Write: Counting Objects to 20 for Grade 1

About This Resource

A complete Grade 1 pack on counting objects to 20: counting pictures, matching groups to numbers, comparing numbers and filling in number order. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, flashcards, a rubric, editable slides and Word files, and answer keys.

Overview

Students count groups of objects up to 20. They touch each object once, say one number for each, and know that the last number tells how many. They match groups to numerals, write numbers, find the missing number in a count, and compare two numbers. Every number answer in the pack is calculated by the generator or checked against the pictures.

Grade 1 (ages 6–7) 40 minutes Counting one-to-one matching writing numbers number order comparing

Student Task

  • Teach the lesson with the slides and real objects such as counters or blocks.
  • Use the worksheet for guided and independent practice in class.
  • Give the quiz at the end of the lesson or the next day, and score it with the answer key and rubric.
  • Send the homework page home and use the flashcards for quick daily review.

Classroom Use

  • Counting bags: put up to 20 small objects in each bag. Students count and write the number.
  • Count the class: count how many students are wearing red, and how many are sitting.
  • Grab and count: students grab a handful of counters, count them and say the number.

Differentiation

Support: use counters and a ten frame, and count to 10 first. Challenge: ask students to count by twos or to find 3 more than a number.

Answer Key & Assessment

Watch whether students touch each object once. The quiz checks counting, matching, number order and comparing. The rubric gives four levels for counting, writing numbers, number order and explaining.

Learning Objectives

  • Count groups of up to 20 objects, saying one number for each object.
  • Match a group of objects to the number that tells how many.
  • Put numbers to 20 in order and find the missing number.

Teacher Tips

Teach students to touch and move each object as they count, so they do not count one twice. Ask, 'How many are there in all?' so they learn that the last number counted tells how many. Arrange objects in rows of five or ten to make counting easier.
