Grade 1 Worksheet 1: Circle the Vowel & Complete the Word
About This Resource
Independent practice circling the vowel sound in ten picture words, then completing five more words by writing the missing vowel — Grade 1 students' first independent short-vowel practice after a lesson.
Overview
A two-page independent-practice worksheet. Page 1 has students look at a picture, say the word, and circle the vowel they hear among the five vowel letters; a second section has them complete a word by writing its missing vowel. Page 2 continues with a look-and-write section and ends with a short quick check.

Student Task
- Say each picture word aloud together as a class before students begin, so the activity checks vowel-sound recognition rather than picture-guessing.
- Distribute individually for independent practice, or project the PDF page and complete the first item or two together as a model.
- Students work individually to circle vowels and complete words.
- Use the Master Answer Key to self-check or grade.
- The editable DOCX lets teachers swap words, adjust the item count, or reuse the format for a different vowel focus.
Classroom Use
- Board warm-up: copy two or three items onto the board and complete them together before handing out individual copies.
- Partner check: partners trade completed worksheets and check each other's answers against a shared answer key before the teacher collects them.
- Early-finisher task: early finishers write one original sentence using any completed word from the worksheet.
- Projector activity: project the PDF page and complete it as a whole-class modeling exercise before assigning it independently.
Differentiation
SUPPORT
Read each word aloud individually to students who need it rather than only as a whole class, and let
them use the Vowel Color Key (the same color-coded vowel circles used throughout the pack) as a
visual anchor while they work.
ON LEVEL
Complete the worksheet independently as designed, self-checking with the answer key when finished.
CHALLENGE
Have students who finish early cover the picture with a finger and try to write the word from memory,
then check themselves against the picture.
Answer Key & Assessment
This worksheet is self-checking: every item has a single correct answer in the Master Answer
Key (print-ready PDF and editable DOCX), so teachers can spot-check understanding during independent
work or collect it as a quick formative check.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to circle the vowel letter that matches the sound heard in a pictured CVC word.
- Students will be able to complete a CVC word correctly by writing its missing vowel.
- Students will be able to read a completed CVC word aloud
Teacher Tips
Before students begin, say each picture word together as a class exactly once at a normal speaking pace — this keeps the task a listening-and-matching skill rather than a picture-guessing game, which is what the vowel-sound objective is actually measuring.
What's Included
- A 2-page print-ready PDF and a matching editable DOCX worksheet, plus the answer key sold separately in the Master Answer Key.
