About This Resource

A two-page, 13-item worksheet covering a representative span of the alphabet, where students circle the one picture (of three) that starts with a shown target letter's sound, with a full answer key.

Overview

Rather than testing all 26 letters, this worksheet samples every other letter across the alphabet (A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q, S, U, W, Y) to keep the activity a manageable length while still giving broad coverage. For each target letter, students see three pictures — one correct match and two distractors drawn from elsewhere in the alphabet — and circle the one that starts with the target sound.

Grade 1 45-55 Minutes Beginning Letter Sound

Student Task

Assign after students have been introduced to most or all of the letters sampled on the page.
Have students say the target letter's sound out loud, then say each of the three picture names before circling.
Students circle the picture that starts with the target letter's sound.
Grade using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

Read each row as a mini "I spy" game aloud to the whole class first — "I'm looking for the picture that starts like queen" — before students complete the row independently, so struggling listeners get an extra oral model.

Differentiation

Support: read each target letter and all three picture names aloud individually rather than having students work silently.

Extension: ask students to name one more word (not pictured) that starts with each target letter's sound.

Answer Key & Assessment

Grade using the included answer key; use results to identify which specific beginning sounds (not just which letters) need more targeted review.
