Grade 1 Phonics Lesson Plan
About This Resource
The full teaching plan behind the Grade 1 Short Vowels unit: a step-by-step sequence for all five vowels, a materials checklist, and built-in differentiation and review — everything a teacher needs to run the week without building a plan from scratch.
Overview
This is the teacher-facing lesson plan that sequences a full short-vowel phonics unit. It walks through five vowel lessons (a, e, i, o, u), one review lesson, and one assessment lesson, with a consistent warm-up → explicit teaching → guided practice → independent practice → wrap-up structure for each. It names exactly which other resources in the pack to use at each step, so a teacher can follow it start to finish without hunting for materials mid-lesson.

Learning Objectives
- Recognize and name the letters of the alphabet and their common sounds.
- Identify beginning sounds in simple words, such as /b/ in ball.
- Blend letter sounds to read simple CVC words, such as cat, dog, and sun.
- Segment words into individual sounds to help with spelling simple words.
- Read and spell simple phonics words with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Lesson Procedure
- Read the full plan once before teaching day 1 — it references other files in the pack by name, so it helps to have the pack open alongside it.
- Print or keep the editable DOCX open on a second screen while teaching; the sequence is designed to be followed lesson by lesson, not all at once.
- Use the materials checklist at the start of each lesson to pull only what that day needs.
- Follow the warm-up → teaching → guided practice → independent practice → wrap-up structure; each stage names an approximate time and the resource to use.
- On the review day, use the Classroom Game and Review Quiz as described.
- On the assessment day, follow the plan's guidance alongside the Assessment resource's own teacher directions page.
Teacher Tips
Read through one full day's sequence the night before you teach it, not just skim the headings — the plan calls out small but important moments (like when *not* to show students the word list during a listening check) that are easy to miss if you only glance at it between classes.
What's Included
- A 3-page print-ready PDF and a matching editable DOCX lesson plan covering all five vowel lessons, one review lesson, and the assessment lesson.
