Grade 2 Weather and Seasons Writing Activity: My Favorite Season Guided Paragraph

About This Resource

A 2-page guided writing activity with a planning box, word bank, sentence starters, 7 writing lines, and a student self-check list for a “My Favorite Season” paragraph.

Overview

This activity scaffolds paragraph writing in four visible steps: plan (draw the season and list words to use), reference (a word bank of season, weather, and clothing vocabulary), draft (sentence starters plus 7 lines to write on), and self-check (a 5-item checklist students use to review their own work before turning it in). The structure keeps the writing task achievable for Grade 2 English learners while still asking for a real, multi-sentence paragraph.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to plan a short paragraph using a drawing and a word list.
  • Students will be able to write a 4+ sentence paragraph about their favorite season using topic vocabulary.
  • Students will be able to use a checklist to review their own writing.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use on Day 4 of the Unit Lesson Plan, right after the Reading Activity, which can serve as a model text. Walk through the sentence starters together before releasing students to write independently.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Once finished, have students trade papers with a partner and use the partner's self-check list together, adding one compliment about a sentence they liked.

Differentiation

Support: Allow students to complete only 4 sentences (one per starter) rather than expanding further, and permit them to copy a starter word-for-word before adding their own ending.
On-Level: Write at least 4-6 original sentences using the starters as a guide, not a strict copy.
Challenge: Ask students to add a fifth sentence comparing their favorite season to a different one, using “but” or “unlike.”

Assessment

Score using the Grade 2 Weather and Seasons Unit Grading Rubric's 4-criteria scale (Accuracy, Reasoning, Completion, Communication).

Teacher Tips

Model your own quick paragraph on the board using the exact same sentence starters before students begin — seeing the frame filled in once removes most of the guesswork.
