Nice to Meet You — Writing Activity

About This Resource

A guided writing worksheet with a picture word bank, four sentence-completion prompts, and an open draw-and-write box about meeting a new friend.

Overview

Part 1 gives students four sentence starters (what they say in the morning, their own name, what they say when they meet someone new, and what they say at night) to complete using the ten-word picture word bank for support. Part 2 opens up further: students draw themselves meeting a new friend and write what they say to each other in the space below, with the option to write about a real classmate or an invented one.

Grade 1 35-45 Writing

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to write simple greeting sentences and a short introduction exchange using picture support.

How to Use This Resource

  • Review the Word Bank pictures and words together.
  • Complete the four sentences in Part 1.
  • Draw yourself meeting a new friend in the Part 2 box.
  • Write what you say to each other on the lines below.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Have students trade completed Part 2 drawings with a partner and try to guess what greeting is being said before reading the partner's written sentence.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to circle Word Bank pictures instead of writing full words, or complete Part 1 orally with a teacher scribing.

Extension: have students write a full three-line dialogue between themselves and their new friend in Part 2 instead of a single sentence each.

Teacher Tips

Let students choose whether to write about a real classmate or an invented friend before they start — some students will have a specific new friend in mind and others won't, and framing the task flexibly from the start keeps every student equally able to participate.
