Count and Write — Writing Activity

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to write simple, complete sentences using number vocabulary.
• Students will be able to independently write about something they counted, using a correct count and naming word.

How to Use This Resource

• Review the Word Bank together and make sure students can read all ten number words.
• Have students complete the four sentence frames in Part 1 independently or with light support.
• For Part 2, have students draw something they would like to count and complete the writing below it.
• Let a few volunteers share their Part 2 page with the class once finished.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Once finished, have students trade papers with a partner and count the partner's drawing themselves to check that the written number matches what was drawn.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to copy a sentence frame directly from the word bank in Part 1, and accept a number plus a drawing for Part 2 without a full sentence.

Extension: ask students to write a second original sentence describing their Part 2 drawing in more detail.

Assessment

Review completed sentences for correct use of number vocabulary and the modeled sentence frame; this is a formative writing check rather than a scored quiz.

Teacher Tips

Have students count their Part 2 drawing out loud before writing the sentence — rehearsing the count first reduces both counting errors and word-order errors for emerging writers, and helps confirm they've chosen a number they can spell confidently.
