About This Resource

A four-page hands-on worksheet where Grade 3 students read arrays, draw their own, match arrays to multiplication sentences, and fill in missing numbers in a rows-columns-product table. It builds directly on the concept from the Arrays and Multiplication PowerPoint and comes with a full answer key.

Overview

This worksheet gives students four different ways to practise the same core skill — connecting an array's rows and columns to its multiplication sentence — so the concept gets reinforced without the activity feeling repetitive. Students start by reading ready-made arrays (a mix of dot arrays and object arrays), then draw their own arrays into blank grids, match arrays to given sentences, and finish with a numeric fill-in-the-blank table. A bonus challenge at the end invites students to design their own larger array.

Student Task

This worksheet works well as independent or paired practice after the main lesson, once students have seen arrays modelled with counters and on the PowerPoint. Hand it out after Guided Practice as described in the Lesson Plan, or use individual activities separately — Activity 1 as a warm-up, Activity 3 as a partner matching task, and the Bonus Challenge as an early-finisher extension. Students can work independently, though pairing students for Activity 2 (drawing their own array) gives them a chance to check each other's work before writing the multiplication sentence.

Classroom Use

After finishing Activity 3 (Match the Array to the Sentence), have students swap papers with a partner and check each other's matches before you review the answers as a class. This adds a quick peer-review step and gets students talking about how they identified rows and columns.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow students to use physical counters alongside Activity 1 and Activity 2 rather than working from the page alone, and reduce Activity 4 to the first three rows if the full table feels overwhelming.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently using the printed arrays and blank grids as given.
CHALLENGE: Have students complete the Bonus Challenge and then write a short word problem to match the array they drew.

Teacher Tips

Watch closely during Activity 2 (drawing arrays) for students who draw the correct total number of dots but in the wrong arrangement — for example, 12 dots scattered rather than organised into 3 clear rows of 4. This is a common early misunderstanding and a good moment for a quick one-on-one reminder that an array specifically means equal rows and columns, not just the right total.
