Grade 3 Multiplication Facts and Arrays Grading Rubric

About This Resource

A five-criteria rubric for assessing student understanding of arrays and multiplication facts, built for Grade 3 Math. It scores understanding of arrays, multiplication sentence accuracy, fact fluency, problem solving, and effort/completion, and is flexible enough to apply to a completed worksheet, a guided-practice observation, or a quick one-on-one check.

Overview

This rubric gives a teacher a consistent way to score student work across the Multiplication Facts and Arrays topic, whether that's a finished Arrays Worksheet, a Word Problem Worksheet, or informal observation during guided practice with counters. Each of the five criteria is scored from 1 to 3 with a clear description at each level, and a scoring summary table on page 2 makes it easy to total scores and add notes. A short guidance section explains which criteria matter most for which task, and how to interpret common patterns in a student's scores.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to describe an array using rows and columns.
  • Students will be able to write a multiplication sentence to match an array.
  • Students will be able to recall multiplication facts for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.
  • Students will be able to solve a simple word problem using an array or multiplication sentence.

How to Use This Resource

  • Choose the criteria most relevant to the task you're marking — the "How to Apply the Levels" section on page 2 points to which criteria line up best with the Word Problem Worksheet, the Multiplication Facts Practice Worksheet, or guided practice with counters. Score each of the five criteria from 1 to 3 based on the level descriptions, add the total on the scoring summary table, and use the notes column to record anything specific about a student's work. This is a teacher-facing assessment tool rather than a student worksheet, so there is no student-facing version or answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Use the rubric during a short one-on-one fact check: call out a multiplication fact, ask the student to build the matching array with counters, and score Understanding of Arrays and Fact Fluency on the spot. Rotating through four or five students during independent work time gives a useful ongoing picture of the whole class's progress.

Teacher Tips

Don't wait until a formal assessment to use this rubric — it works just as well as a quick informal check during guided practice. Watching a student build one array with counters and score them on Understanding of Arrays takes less than a minute and gives you a much clearer picture than a worksheet score alone.
