Grade 3 Weather and Seasons Vocabulary Worksheet

About This Resource

A two-page worksheet that practises 8 weather words and 4 season names through picture matching, sorting, missing-letter spelling, and independent writing. Built for Grade 3 students learning English as a second or foreign language.

Overview

This worksheet gives students four different ways to work with the same 12-word vocabulary set, so the words are reinforced without the page feeling repetitive. Activity 1 has students match six weather pictures to their words using a word bank. Activity 2 asks them to sort all 12 words into "weather word" or "season name" columns, checking that they understand the difference between the two categories. Activity 3 uses picture-supported missing-letter spelling for the remaining six words, and Activity 4 removes the word bank entirely, asking students to write four words or phrases from the picture alone. The activities move from fully supported to independent, which suits a single practice lesson or a piece of homework.

Grade 3 45-50 Minutes Vocabulary Weather and Seasons

Student Task

  • Hand out after the vocabulary has been introduced with the Vocabulary PowerPoint and practised with the Flashcards, so students are matching and spelling words they have already heard and said aloud. Students can work independently, though Activity 1 and 2 also work well as quick pair check-ins before students finish Activities 3 and 4 on their own. Review answers as a class or collect the worksheet to mark using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

  • After marking the worksheet, play a quick "Stand Up" game: call out one of the 12 words and have students stand if it's a weather word, stay seated if it's a season name (or the reverse). It reuses Activity 2's sorting skill as a whole-class movement check.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Let students complete only Activities 1 and 2 if Activities 3 and 4 are too demanding, or allow them to keep the Flashcards on their desk as a spelling reference during Activity 3.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently in the suggested order.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write one full sentence for each of the four words in Activity 4 (for example, "It's the cool season. It is not very hot.") instead of just the word or phrase.

Answer Key & Assessment

Collect the completed worksheet and mark it against the answer key. Activities 1 and 3 show whether students recognise individual words; Activity 2 shows whether they understand the weather/season category distinction; Activity 4 is the clearest sign of which words a student has genuinely learned, since there is no word bank to rely on.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify 8 weather words and 4 season names from pictures.
  • Students will be able to sort weather words and season names into the correct category.
  • Students will be able to spell weather and season vocabulary with picture support.
  • Students will be able to write weather and season vocabulary independently, without a word bank.

Teacher Tips

If a student finishes early, have them cover the word with their hand and try to say the full sentence ("It's rainy." or "It's the rainy season.") for each picture on the page, turning the vocabulary review into a quick extra speaking rehearsal for the Quiz or Speaking Activity.
